We intervened after more than 100 mothers were detained at Mama Lucy Hospital for unpaid maternity bills, leading to their release and restored dignity.
At Mama Lucy Hospital in Nairobi, more than 100 poor mothers were detained inside the maternity wards because they could not pay their hospital bills. These were women who had just given birth, exhausted and healing, yet unable to return home. Many of them stayed inside the hospital for days, feeling forgotten and powerless.
When we learned about their situation, we took immediate action. Through the Dignity Not Detention campaign, we wrote to the hospital management, filed formal complaints, supported the affected families, and organized a peaceful protest. We also invited the media so the country could see the injustice these mothers were facing.
The story touched the nation. A Kenyan philanthropist, Mike Sonko, stepped in and cleared the bills. One by one, the mothers walked out with their babies, free at last. Their release reminded us why we continue this fight: no mother should ever be detained for giving life.
