We helped secure the freedom of 28 young mothers who were held at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital after childbirth because they could not pay their medical bills.

At Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, 28 mothers were detained after giving birth because they could not pay their medical bills. Many of them were still teenagers. Some were held for more than two months, unable to go home to their families. These young mothers were tired, in pain, and caring for newborn babies while being kept inside the hospital wards.

Through the Dignity Not Detention campaign, we refused to stay silent. We raised the issue in the media, stood beside the families, and moved to court to challenge the unlawful detentions. Our team worked closely with partners and supporters to ensure that the voices of these mothers were heard.

Finally, every detained mother was released. Their freedom reminded the country that no woman should suffer after giving life. Every mother deserves dignity, not detention.
